A new and frightening escalation in the virus world is circulating the Internet. A virus called Cryptolocker has been infecting PCs through an email attachment. The virus runs and encrypts data on your PC as well as on shared drives that may reside on servers or network attached storage (NAS) devices. The effects are devastating. Once the data is encrypted you lose access to your files potentially on your local PC as well as server based files and the virus creators are asking for money to get the decryption key. The virus uses very high level encryption so brute force decryption would take years perhaps hundreds of years which obviously is not an option. At that point, the options are limited to recovering from backup. WHAT YOU NEED TO DO: Please inform your users and make sure they do NOT open any attachments from unknown sources in their email.
