A new building for the collection of the Vitra Design - TopicsExpress

A new building for the collection of the Vitra Design Museum The Vitra Design Museum possesses one of the largest furniture design collections in the world. This collection comprises more than 6000 pieces of furniture, about 1000 lights and the estates of several important designers including Charles and Ray Eames, Verner Panton and Alexander Girard. To date, this collection has not been accessible to the public. To facilitate the permanent presentation of parts of the collection, a new building is currently under construction on the Vitra Campus in Weil am Rhein. The structure was designed by Basel-based architects Herzog & de Meuron; its opening is planned for the end of 2015. In the new building, the objects will be presented as a »staged collection« in the spirit of a publicly accessible depot, which will allow comprehensive insights into the history of furniture design. The building will also contain smaller areas for changing exhibitions around collection-related themes, a café and a shop, as well as providing glimpses into further storage and working areas of the museum. The existing, Frank Gehry-designed Museum building will continue to show large temporary exhibitions.
