A new day, a new poll and the trend continues. The latest ABC Poll was released Monday (1/19/14), a day before Obama gives his State of the Union speech to Congress. Considering the tough crowd he faces, the poll gives him much-needed backup. Overall, the president’s approval rating is up 9 points since December. He’s even up with conservatives. (11 points since October) This is due to a number of factors, the primary one being the belated recognition that the economy really is getting better. The stock market is back in the stratosphere. Gas prices are DOWN! Five straight years of job growth. Unemployment rate lowest since before the Great Recession. Even the Regressive DS’s (Doctors of Spinology) are having a hard time spinning their usual economic b.s. One of the questions asked in the poll concerned Obama’s handling of the Keystone Pipeline issue: 16. Obama has said he won’t decide whether to approve a new oil pipeline from Canada to Texas until a review has determined whether it is in the national interest. The Republicans in Congress are working on a law to authorize the pipeline without Obama’s approval. Which side do you support – (should the pipeline be authorized now), or (should the review be completed before deciding)? By a 27 point margin, (61-34) the pollees (is that a word?) told the pollers that they supported Obama’s position on the pipeline. The Regressives have been selling this as jobs, Jobs, JOBS, however only 35 of them will be permanent. If the Regressives really want to put people back to work, the country’s infrastructure (roads, bridges, dams, buildings, etc.) could use some upgrading. The poll also found support for Obama’s proposed community college tuition elimination by a 53 to 44 margin. They’re behind Obama when it comes to issuing executive actions when congress won’t act. 50-44 on that one. They’re against upping the hours required for federal health insurance, as is Obama. And, in support of what is sure to be emphasized in the SOTU, they think big business pays too little taxes. 65% of those polled, feel they pay too little, compared to 19% that feel they pay their fair share and 9% who actually think they pay too much. Does this polling change anything? Probably not, but it does give the President firm ground on which to stake his positions, and a good deal of ammo (if the Dems don’t shoot themselves in the foot with it) for the upcoming battles leading to 2016.
