A new dynamic class offering at SWCC, the “Humanities Seminar,” will begin on Wednesday, September 11th in Dellinger Hall, Room DE-118, from 12:15 PM to 2:55 PM. This class is being offered as HUM 195-01 for one credit and HUM 198-01 for three credits and is open to learners wishing to share ideas and insights concerning current issues related to the “Crime & Punishment; Violence & Nonviolence” theme of the course. Feature and documentary films will be shown weekly on the topic to generate discussion from varied perspectives. Students will explore questions, such as the following: What is the social and economic impact of the modern penitentiary system? What strategies work historically for the reform of criminals – rehabilitative or punitive measures or both? How does family, education, and poverty impact crime and violence in society? What is the role of the death penalty in reducing crime and what are related moral considerations? What is the impact of mental disease on violence in society and who is responsible for improving mental health? What is conflict resolution and how does non-violent action work?
