A new lava flow on August 31! Not here, but in Iceland. livescience/47632-iceland-volcano-new-eruption.html . 1.1 billion years ago we would have experienced similar events right here in the Keweenaw. But luckily for us, the Midcontinent Rift is no longer active and hasn’t been for about a billion years. Geologists often try to understand past events by studying present day analogs like this basalt flow. The evidence that we have of this Midcontinent Rift are hundreds of layers of basalt and about 20 conglomerate layers sandwiched in between. These layers were lifted near the surface by faulting and are now exposed over much of the western half of the peninsula. Check out some of our basalts and imagine our ancient fiery molten landscape. #ThrowbackThursday
