A new paper has been published that supports the use of prevention methods in those concerned with memory issues and cognitive decline. The team conducting the research analysed a group of 531 dementia free people with an average age of 73 years. 56% of the participants reported a change in memory occurring at an average age of 82 years. It was reported that these individuals were found to be three times as likely to go on to develop memory and cognitive problems. During the course of the study around one in six of the participants developed dementia, with 80% of these individuals first reporting memory changes. The author comments Whats notable about our study is the time it took for the transition from self-reported memory complaint to dementia or clinical impairment -- about 12 years for dementia and nine years for clinical impairment -- after the memory complaints began,. Importantly these findings suggest that there may be a significant window of opportunity for intervention before a diagnosable problem shows up.
