A new report has just been released by Oxfam revealing that 85 people control as much wealth as HALF the worlds population. Pause for a minute and think about that. 85 people are as wealthy as half the world. This is global capitalism at work. This is what happens when profits are more important than people. We think we live in a democracy, but who - really - is running the show? Some people will read this article and think: I wish I were among the 85. Others will read it and say, something is horribly wrong with our global economic system -- something so wrong that it cannot be fixed without a global struggle for human rights and a more just economic order. Yesterday, we celebrated MLK day. We claimed to revere a man who was committed, at the end of his life, to building a Poor Peoples Movement -- a movement uniting poor people of all colors in a struggle for social and economic justice. What do you think Dr. King would say about 85 people controlling most of the wealth and resources of the world? I think I know. The question is whether we would listen. Dead men make such convenient heroes; we can celebrate their values and ideals without being challenged to live by them.
