A nice day in Atwood in northwest Kansas. Book talk at the American Legion, lunch and a screening at the Jayhawk Theater. Met some amazing Kansans. First, it was an honor to speak to veterans at the American Legion where I met two brothers whose ancestors were killed by the Cheyenne in the last Indian raid in Kansas, 1878. Id love to share more on this story. Someday. Even more interesting was the flag hanging over the podium. Signed by World War 1 vets from Atwood. Then, I met Lonnie Franks who is in her 90s. So much I could say about this great lady. But in summary she lived in Lawrence and went to KU. She was there when some raid survivors were still alive but greater than that, Lonnie was one of a handful of women who protested segregation at KU. She told me a few amazing stories of World War 2, victories in civil rights and Phog Allen. She said the film made her weep. Standing and talking with her did the same to me. History in the flesh and a wonderful Kansan. I love the trails, the stories and the people of Kansas.
