A nice post on this page the other day by Donna Twombly In todays job market, education is a must. Competition is fierce, mere skills and experience are not considered to be qualifications. It may be because in most workplaces, the ability to use the latest technology to make impressive multi-media presentations for management is much more important than the ability to ensure product and process are effective at delivering a quality product to the customer. Not to disrespect the many young engineers I have worked with over the past 10 years, but in some corporate environments, a good power point presentation is truly a tool for advancement. The deciders cant seem to grasp data or other information unless it is presented in simple bullets, with animation and sound. They dont want to be presented anything that requires effort on their part to make a ruling on a proposal. If it requires actual reasoning and analysis, the project is rejected. I blame it on the new business management philosophy. The details of the actual product you are delivering to your customer are above most management level employees, that is left to the low lifes. They think they can manage any business without understanding anything except the budget. Back when I was trained in business management, it was made very clear that understanding the business from the purchase point on up to the home office was considered the most important skill a manager could posses. This is now old fashioned and outdated. Unless of course, you are the customer who was delivered a sub standard product because a decision maker who doesnt grasp the fundamentals of the business is in charge.
