A non-hostellers view on the matter: Being a resident of - TopicsExpress

A non-hostellers view on the matter: Being a resident of Jorhat town and a non-hosteller, I didnt have a very close relationship with any hostel in particular. But those occasional small stays and visits gave me a different perspective about the relationship between the seniors and juniors. The respect with which every student treats his or her seniors and the love and affection the seniors had for the juniors was overwhelming for me. The sentiment everyone had for their hostels was overwhelming for me. If it wasnt for my hostel dwelling friends, I wouldnt know how to treat a senior, I wouldnt know how to treat a junior. I wouldnt have that sentiment for the college. I dont believe such an environment would exist in a hostel without different batches living together. Now coming to the issue of ragging, what did the superintendents do? Everybody and his pet knew freshers were tortured, abused, exploited everyday by some(?!) seniors. Most of the physical abuse happened during the night. How many visits were given by the superintendents during night time? One cannot expect a 19 year old guy to take a stand against an entire batch of seniors. Even if one does, it is very much possible that he will become a boycott for the rest of his stay in that hostel. At that point the only relief would have been a sudden visit by the superintendent. The main factor that encouraged ragging was the lack of fear among those who did it. Why arent there sufficient security guards in the hostels? Why was the number of non-hostellers greater than any of the hostels in my own batch (2006-2010)? Why did several of my friends had to escape from the hostel at midnight and leave the hostel permanently? Why has there been no actions to be seen? Heres another dangerous fact(?). I am not making a claim as I cant produce hard evidence here but it is a well known fact that many alumni of the college and some of who probably are now esteemed faculties, are actually proud that they faced ragging and did ragging (I am sorry for generalizing too much). I personally heard this phrase: ৰেগিঙেই খোৱা নাই যদি কিহৰ ইঞ্জিনীয়াৰিং পঢ়িলি? several times myself. With that kind of attitude towards the issue I dont think any active steps will be taken by the authorities. OK. Speaking of active steps, they are now taking a step and a significant one. But does it show their goodwill (or just will) to tackle the issue? Doesnt seem like it. It is an attempt to make an environment where they dont have to face the issue anymore. They dont want to give visits at night, they dont want to encourage peaceful coordination among different batches, they dont want to be bothered about it, they dont have enough cares to give to the matter. They just want to settle this once and for all. Thats not what is expected of the authorities. They are expected to care, to be bothered. They are supposed to be concerned about the relationship between the students. They are supposed to be concerned about the facilities and security of the students (sounds funny, doesnt it? Security!). They are supposed to be concerned about the educational environment in the hostels. But no, they are too busy for that. They want the simple solution. Seniors rag juniors? Dont let them stay together. Finally, to the authorities, with all due respect I want to reveal a well known secret. The alumni that regularly or irregularly visit the college dont visit the department or the office. They visit their dearly missed home of 4 years, their hostel. I dont have that home. And now with your about to be taken action the future JOENCOVITES wont have that either.
