A northern Mindanao airport that took 22 years to build will soon - TopicsExpress

A northern Mindanao airport that took 22 years to build will soon be in operation even without aircraft landing equipment. As a result, planes arriving at the Laguindingan Airport--which intends to serve the Cagayan de Oro-Iligan Industrial Corridor (CIIC)--will rely solely on clear weather conditions to guide pilots while making their approach. This is the main reason why the Cagayan de Oro Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Inc. (Oro Chamber) is opposing its inauguration on Saturday, June 15, 2013. "Millions of pesos will be foregone due to reduced flights, passenger traffic, and cargo volume not to mention the travelers’ safety and convenience," Oro Chamber president Efren T. Uy said in a letter addressed to President Benigno Aquino III, who will inaugurate the airport. Without an instrument landing system, planes arriving at the Laguindingan Airport will use visual flight rules (VFR), which pilots use to operate aircraft in weather conditions clear enough to allow him to see where the aircraft is going. The ILS will be installed at Laguindingan and will be operational on May 2014. Despite the absence of the ILS, President Aquino will be formally opening the airport on Saturday. Worth P7.9 billion, the airport is considered as one of the most delayed government infrastructure projects of all time. interaksyon/business/63754/laguindingan-airport-takes-22-years-to-build-but-still-lacks-aircraft-landing-equipment
