A northern-based activist and President of the Civil Rights Congress of Nigeria, Mallam Shehu Sani, on Thursday tackled President Goodluck Jonathan on his assertion that insecurity in the country, occasioned by the activities of the Boko Haram insurgents, was worse than the Nigerian civil war that claimed one million lives. Sani, in his reactions to the bomb blast that rocked Abuja on Wednesday, insisted that rather than giving excuses, the President must settle down to solving the current security challenges in the country. The CRC boss, in a statement on Thursday, noted that the unceasing violence in the land reflected the impotence of security agents and the ineptitude of government in combating, containing and crushing the insurgency. “We have had enough of commentaries, condemnation, analysis, excuses about the insurgency; it’s time to solve the problem. Great leaders prove their mettle in times of great challenges. This is the time for our leaders to prove their worth and value,” he said. He noted that the priority of the Jonathan administration was not in tackling the current security challenges in the country, saying in the 2014 budget, the total capital budget for the Nigerian security forces was N45bn while N53bn was allocated to 30,000 Niger Delta militants for ‘rehabilitation and integration’. He said the Niger Delta Development Commission got N111.1bn. “These figures reflect the priority and interest of the Federal Government,” Sani said. In differing from the President’s statement, Sani argued that in spite of the gruesome killings occasioned by the activities of the Boko Haram insurgents, the Nigerian Civil War remained the most bloody conflict in the history of Nigeria. He explained that saying insurgency in the country, which had claimed 15,000 lives, was worse than the Civil War, only amounted to expedient revision of history to downplay the carnage of the Civil War in order to portray the current situation in the country today.
