A note on Domestic Workers and their issues-A study by Chayanika Gogoi,Intern,Maitri,Jorhat. We know that a domestic worker is a person who works within the household of an employer. They are usually expected to perform a variety of household services for an individual or a family. Their service may also include providing child care or looking after the elderly dependents in the family. Their responsibility may also include cooking, washing clothes, cleaning the house, ironing the laundry and they are usually expected to live within the household where they work. We are also aware of the conditions in which these domestic helpers are expected to work. They are often ill treated. In most cases it is seen that this section of society is one of the most underprivileged section. Many a times, they are not paid according to the amount of work they are asked to do. As a result they can’t afford their basic amenities. In the past three weeks, I have come across over more than thirty domestic helpers. Each of them has a story to tell. And their part of the story is usually a sad one. They have been through a lot in life. In most of the stories which they tell us there flows a river of tears at the end. In short, life was more or less unfair to them. However, working with an NGO that emphasizes only on domestic worker and their well being was a good experience. Teaching and training them in various fields and then placing them according to their convenience weren’t that easy like it seemed. On a general note, these domestic helpers should be taught to be independent and self reliant so that they can stand for themselves in a situation where their self esteem is questioned. Because in most cases, it is witnessed that domestic helpers are subjected to suspicion from the employers. The motto is to uplift such situations in the rear future. Lastly, they should be placed equally in the society and their issues should be taken care of. Because there is “dignity of labor” in any kind of work
