A novel case of nuisance... Joseph Saunders, of Long Marston, who did not appear, was charged with creating a nuisance by coming from London while suffering from small pox. Mr. Jones, relieving officer of the Berkhamstead Union, said Saunders... came to Long Marston to reside for a time, the result being that his mother and brother-in-law, who lived in the house, fell ill with the same disease. The Chairman said they could do nothing with the case in the absence of Saunders, but a warrant would be issued for his apprehension; as it was necessary it should be publicly known that persons acting as Saunders did were liable to be committed to take their trial for misdemeanour. This is not the only case in which persons taken ill with small pox in London have been sent into this neighbourhood to the danger of the inhabitants, The magistrates are determined strictly to enforce the law. (Hertford Mercury and Reformer, Jun 1863).
