A number of folks have raised criticisms about the ALS Bucket - TopicsExpress

A number of folks have raised criticisms about the ALS Bucket Challenge. One such criticism is that ice-bucket challengers are nothing but slacktivists, using the stunt as a way to feel good about themselves and giving themselves an excuse not to write a cheque to this cause. Another such criticism is that what if all the thousands of people who spent money on buying ice and dumping water over their heads just gave the money to ALS quietly instead? For all my friends that remember, in 2007 I started a group on Facebook entitled For every 100 members who joins this group, I will donate $2 to the Canadian Cancer Society. The initiative was a big success, that has since spawned multiple fundraisers and helped raised thousands for cancer research and patient care programs. In a perfect world, people would donate without such gimmicks. However, we live in a world where people are programmed to respond to such campaigns. As well, in an increasingly competitive market for donor dollars, innovative activities like these are a great way for charitable organizations to differentiate themselves from other equally worthy causes. In my experience, social media campaigns like these can be very effective in raising awareness of critical issues, and providing people with a fun way to get involved with a cause. Fun activities, Ive found, is what keeps people coming back and staying involved. I think we should all look at the end result and continue to support this very worthy cause!!!
