A parent asks our group: Do others find that their sensory kiddos do better at school than with a lot of activity? My almost 6 year old hasnt officially been diagnosed but has a referral to OT and is being assessed for ADHD and weve found since leaving school and being in an active daycare program for the summer that her hyperactivity has actually gotten more pronounced, to the point of affecting her ability to make friends. Im so sad for her and my educated brain can make sense of this but everywhere I turn people think Im nuts with this observation! And on that note, how can we alleviate her stress? Shes very sensitive and struggles to understand why kids dont want to play with her. Im close to breaking down and medicating because I feel like Ive exhausted all the strategies out there for calming her and trying to help her control her impulses. An example of what we see: I picked her up after work from the program and it literally took her 10 minutes to be able to focus her attention enough to change her shoes. She was literally vibrating. Another time I picked her up a little early and she completely melted down, when usually shes happy to see me and thrilled if I pick her up early. Shes not one who struggles with transitions so much. Any insights from other parents who have been there.
