A parent asks our group: Hi! A question for my fellow parents of gifted SPD kiddos- we recent got a diagnosis of SPD for my 9 yo son(we suspected this for a while). His iq at 4 was 124 which disqualified him bc his SPD at the time was not affecting him at school. We have lucked out with lots of in school support but the OT suggested we see a psychologist to rule out an emotional or mood disorder (totally agree!) because of his volcanic meltdowns. We will meet a psychologist Monday- how do I explain this to him? When we brought him to the ot a few months ago He reacted with a What is wrong with me, why do you hate me which is typical of him when we ask him do do something out of his comfort zone and one of the reasons for the Evals. I told him with the last set of Evals that we are trying to find ways for all of us to work together as a family to accommodate the sensations that upset him while discovering new sensations/strategies he enjoys that can be used to calm him when hes feeling angry. I also to him I want to learn strategies and tools to be a better mom. Any advice is greatly appreciated!!!
