A parent asks our group: I have a question for the group.... What do you do when you feel your child is showing signs of autism and your pediatrician wont take you seriously (or give a referral to a specialist)? We have a six year old with moderate autism and a two year old who is showing a lot of (what I think are) red flags. He has been in ST through early intervention for a few months and is just starting to speak (he repeats us a lot and recognizes a few animals but is unable to communicate his needs or do anything other than labeling and repeating when we prompt him) and he doesnt point/gesture, play with toys, play with his peers at daycare. He also does quite a bit of hand flapping and is very limited in what he will eat, as well as very attached to a routine (there will be a 30-45 minute tantrum if he doesnt get his milk right away when we get home from daycare, or if we do bath before dinner instead of after). His pediatrician says its too early to be concerned, but with another child who has autism I cant help but be concerned. Im not sure what I should do next.
