A patient at work said she recently lost her best friend and put one of her most prized posessions in the coffin. Said people thought she was crazy but she said she had to do it. I then had a flash back of being at a funeral home, talking to the mortician and asking if I could see my dad one last time. He said it wouldnt be preferable, that his accident was so bad that he was barely recognizable and the image would haunt me forever. I pulled something from my pocket and asked, Then...could you pin this on his shirt, please? It was my Operation Iraqi Freedom medal. That guy looked at me and burst into tears. I just smiled because I knew it was the right thing to do. I wanted him to have something that meant the world to me, like he did. Its funny how memories randomly pop up like that.
