A patient in pain came to the doctor. He said, Doctor, when I touch my forehead, it is paining. When I touch my shoulder, my shoulder is hurting and when I touch my stomach it is aching too. The doctor looked at him and said, You have a broken finger. The man like many of us was unable to see where the problem lay. This happens to all of us. We seek the answers to our problems in places where there is none. Happiness is like that. We seek it in objects which have none. In Vedanta philosophy it is said, The object of pleasure cannot give us happiness all the time. Think when the desire to eat a piece of cake arises. We eat the first piece and feel good, we eat the second piece we feel better, but if we eat the tenth piece we may have nausea. The same object of desire has become an object of rejection. Where did the happiness go from the object? Well, happiness was never in the object, the same object cannot give us happiness all the time. The happiness was in the subject or the person. Thus happiness lies within. As sweetness is in the sugar and heat in the fire, the ability to experience happiness lies within each one of us. Happiness is a state of mind that is related to being calm and peaceful. This is the natural state of the mind. The mind is always peaceful but desires in the form of distractions disturb the mind. It then becomes agitated and un- rests sets in. You feel, when I fulfil my desire, my mind will be calm. Sure, thats what happens, desire fulfilled and you are calm and peaceful. But, after some time, another distraction another desire and the mind is in the same situation of agitation. This is how most people live their life. First a Maruti, then a Hundai and then a BMW. Bigger and better desires in the form of objects indundate our mind and we thus become victims of our desires. This is how victim consciousness develops. Think you buy a new gadget and operate it without reading the manual. You make fail. Similarly to operate and drive your life towards happiness, you will have to read the manual of life. In this manual the first line is, Happiness is within....look inwards.
