A pedestrian and cycling bridge is being built in Johannesburg - TopicsExpress

A pedestrian and cycling bridge is being built in Johannesburg connecting the oldest informal township Alexandra to the commercial high-rise heart of Sandton. Despite the fact that there are only 2 million vehicles to 50 million people, the city is a city built for cars: sprawled and lacking in public transport. The majority of inhabitants spend between 30-40% of their already meagre income getting between the spaces where they live and work and play. Forty percent! And then there are those who walk. The distances are great to commute on foot and the paths underdeveloped and unfriendly to the commuter. This massive 5km long bridge is the first step towards prioritising the needs of these people. It is more than just bricks and mortar, it is a step towards sustainable living and a walkable city. It is a bridge between blue and white collar. It is a bridge between historical segregation and spatial integration. It’s a move towards a city space where we can all thrive together
