A personal story about a manager who managed my expectations right out of a job: There was this manager I was looking to partner with but right as the possibility of an agreement became more real he started managing my expectations with phrases like, Just so you know, I cant promise this... and Who knows how this will turn out, there are lots of factors that... and We have to be realistic about how things are.... It hit me, he was SCARED. He was scared to succeed because hed have to maintain a certain level of success and scared to fail because hed have to figure out how to succeed. Needless to say, I ran the other way. I can be scared all by myself. And Im not a scaredy cat, neither are you. How about we manage expectations so that people expect the world from us and we give them the universe instead?
