A photo from my personal family collection. Pictured here on the left is mine, Brother Johns, cousins John and Tom Skinners grandfather, John Leach Skinner(12.26.1887-10.14.1950).An unidentified photographer made the photo c.1903 in front of the Littleton Post Office. The young man on the right was not identified. In research on the town, I have learned Mr EB Perrys Drug Store was two doors away from the Post Office. His drug store was on South Main Street. Maybe the old maps I will be viewing later this week will show the location. The lamp post is identical to the one in a previous photo post of the towns railroad passenger station. I my time, I remember a post office post office on North Main where Littleton Hardware is now located. My mother, Betsy Skinner Acai, lead to way to have the federal government build a new facility in town, which is the current day post office. Persons Ordinary was at one time the town post office. These type photo were sometimes referred to as tintypes which is a misnomer because tin was not used to make them. The photos were developed directly onto thin iron plates lacquered black or chocolate brown. Sometimes they were referred to as ferrotypes or melainotypes. The developing process did not require the use of a wet darkroom. Unlike daguerreotypes and ambrotypes, which needed the protection of an enclosed glass case, the tintype was more durable. Positive comments/feedback is always welcomed. Enjoy and Share, Stephen
