A photo of my father, who served in the Army Air Corps. My maternal grandparents, however, were true heroes during WWII. They had three sons serving at the same time, and they rarely knew specifically where any of them were. Letter communication was erratic. Typically, they would get a bunch at once, then never hear anything again for months. My poor grandparents spent a couple of years waiting for the telegram guy. Fortunately, all three boys survived the war. I dont have any photos scanned of my uncles Frank, Ed or Bob in uniform, but I do have this funny photo of Frank -- the one *not* in uniform below. (You MUST click through to see his garters.) Uncle Frank was stationed in England, and went to Mass every morning. He flew on bombers in the Air Corps. For each mission, one of the men in the squadron would stay behind. One day, when it was Franks turn to stay behind, his bomber was shot down and everyone was killed. It was tough for him being the only one of the squadron left. He was my mothers favorite brother, and an amazing individual. He was killed in 1963 when his car was struck by a train. I found out only recently that he was gay. He was tormented that not only could he not come out of the closet, but that his family did not quite know how to deal with it. I wish he had lived in a different time. He was buried with all of his military medals. A couple of years ago, my mother expressed regret that he was buried with his medals, because she really would like to have had them. I was able to go through the National Archive and order every single one of the medals he was awarded, and they were sent to me free of charge. I mounted them in a shadow box and gave them to my mom.
