A piece in the FT magazine today about GDP, which measures the market economy, questions whether its really the best measure of success. Is it wise, for example, to measure a nurses productivity by the number of patients seen in a day rather than the quality of care provided? Some activities are invisible -such as caring for a child or elderly relative - and these arent even included in GDP. But if people swapped roles with friends and allocated themselves an hourly rate of pay, so that grandpa is cared for by a stranger, the work would count and the govt would have found a new source of taxable income. The same applies in childcare. At MAHM we know that some things that really matter (such as the care provided by families) cant be measured and arent acknowledged on govts books. So, is it time to reconsider what we mean by productivity and contribution? The point is not everything that counts can be counted!! The current system just isnt working. ft/cms/s/2/dd2ec158-023d-11e4-ab5b-00144feab7de.html#ixzz36cmAVAjs
