A poem by Hamraz Ahsan The Prison Wall O friend, if only I could clamber over this wall Then, on the other side When the alarm bell rings I shall ask my heart Did I not tell you one day we shall be free? A real lifer they made of me alongside so many others Many arms embrace me Many voices hail me Even the solitaries send me greetings Trackers followed the trail Left by the sun’s footprints Leading to my house As dawn broke Night trooped in They made us lie on the ground Some were hanged Others waited their turn All were battered and bruised They asked How come the sun passed through your courtyard? We are declared rebels Denied all visitors We will scale the prison wall We will scale the prison wall Punjabi poem by Hamraz Ahsan English translation by Tania O’donnell
