A poignant missed connection. A neighbor in our building, Virginia - TopicsExpress

A poignant missed connection. A neighbor in our building, Virginia Scott, passed away recently. As happens in New York apartment buildings, neighbors often nod, but go no further in getting to know each other. As it was with Virginia. I knew her to nod to and smile, when I saw her very rarely. Tonight, as I was doing laundry, I saw a set of paperbacks with a very red cover. They were a book of poems. By Virginia Scott. She was a poet, in the same building. And in fact, she attended City College, as I do. On a research grant from City College, she traveled to Africa, and many of the poems are from that experience. Two connections, never known to each other. The book is called Toward Appomattox, and Im fascinated by them. Suddenly, I know her in a way I never did as a chance neighbor. I read the poems, and nod at their real presence. I salute her, belatedly. I was meant to find these poems. And Im glad that I did.
