A post I made in a School discussions group: I wanted to reflect on a few things to offer a different perspective and light to some of the discussion here. In CR, and nationally there as been attention to a disproportionate amount of student suspensions or even a bias towards students of color. And then I looked at a thread about the extra credit being posted on twitter, and the issue of internet, phones and electronics, and students and parents of color or low socioeconomic status not having access to these resources, so the students are set at a further disadvantage. So my point is students of color, nationally and local tend to face adversity due to socioeconomic barriers that are out of their control . Poverty is something you are born into, and you dont have a choice in and the one way out is an education. Parents, often single parents, cant be as involved because they are doing it alone, and working full time sometimes two jobs to take care of their family, and make it possible for basic survival. So the solution in all of this I believe is instituting programs to help these students get ahead and prevent drop out rather than place more challenges on their already difficult lives and disadvantaged position It is better for our community and everyone in it to turn out better citizens and more graduates, so everyone will benefit from it. They need supportive programs from counseling services, to after school tutoring and computer lab and printing resources. This is an important discussion to have.
