A post made by a lady we respect and who tells it like it is. Regarding farmers and land owners being all cast as......well, you get the drift. What really makes me irate is the fact that people are so very far removed from reality. My reality at the moment is pretty tough, we have cattle dying due to drought conditions & before you pipe up and tell me we should have sold them, let me tell you we sold off ALL saleable cattle at Easter time. The cattle we have left are our cows & calves that we are desperately trying to keep alive by pushing scrub, cutting scrub, feeding cotton seed & lick supplements out and in general doing everything we can for them. The last tank of water was pumped from our house dam on Monday. We are now on a very limited bore water supply. We have nearly 600 head of cattle away on agistment. People are capitalising on our situation, hay prices are through the roof for decent hay, other feed prices are also ludicrous. We are not doing it easy because we also have families to keep going as well physically & mentally. Kids at school are suffering because they see their parents & grandparents struggling. We have no income except for those of us who are lucky enough to have a partner who works off farm. Cattle & sheep are worth nothing, our cattle market is flooded with cattle that would normally go to the live export trade thus then driving the market prices down. Droughted stock cannot be sold, you do everything you can to keep them going. We then have people who are actively trying to kill our way of life by trying to stop live export markets, prosecuting us for perceived animal cruelty & in general hating us because we live on the land. I sincerely hope these same people dont wear or eat anything a farmer produces. We are very practical and a tough breed of people but we are also getting less & less. Have a think about where you want your food products to come from & what sort of quality it will be if the farmers of today disappear. This is not just beef producers, grain growers, small crops or wool growers, it is EVERYONE who will be affected. Support your producers & stand behind them. We are not all bad, the majority of us care deeply for our land & livestock, just like not everyone is a child molester, not every farmer is cruel. Rant over. Kylie Sav.
