A powerful arctic cold front is diving south through the area as of mid-morning Monday. Temperatures in Northern Nebraska have already fallen into the 20s and 30s. Ahead of the front, temps will reach the 40s, 50s, and 60s. Those temps will plummet once the cold front moves through. By the end of the afternoon, most locations will be in the 20s and 30s. Behind the front, winds are strong out of the north. Sustained gusts directly behind the front are already getting over 30 mph and later today could be up around 35 to 40 mph in some locations with gusts up to 50 mph. While clouds will be thickening up behind the front, precipitation will be lacking. The best chance of some light snow accumulations today would be in Northern Nebraska where totals are mostly expected to be less than one inch other than the Panhandle. Some light snow may transition southward towards this evening. Although most will see no more than a dusting, somebody may get upwards of a half inch of wind-driven snow. Beyond midnight, snow moves out and so do clouds eventually. Temperatures will fall into the 10s, but with continued blustery winds, wind chills could fall below zero. Veterans Day will be a cold and blustery day with winds in the 15 to 25 mph range. Temps will only warm into the 20s despite partly to mostly sunny skies. Through the weekend, highs will only be in the 20s and lower 30s with lows in the 10s and single digits at times. The only other chance of snow looks to come in between Friday night and Saturday night. Its tough to say if it will amount to much at this time, but odds are, we should see any major accumulations. Beyond the next seven days, long range forecast models are consistent with the cold air sticking around awhile. It looks like at least the next two weeks and possibly through at least Thanksgiving will feature highs no greater than the 30s. Although colder air will come during the winter, this is an impressive cold snap for November. That includes both the cold air and the duration.
