People were outraged by government corruption, no services in poor communities, an economy crippled by constant strikes and racial tensions. The anger over state-sanctioned violence spilled over after the 2011 massacre at Marikana, where police shot and killed 34 striking miners. People were incensed by television images showing the police firing assault rifles at fleeing miners. The violence struck a deep and disturbing chord among those who had lived through similar events under apartheid.
