A primary reason the Korean ferry Sewol sunk is because the multinational conglomerate tycoon and evangelical minister Yoo Byung-eun decided to re-fashion himself into a famous artist named Ahae. Like so many other artists, Ahae bought himself exhibitions at the Louvre, Versailles, and the Grand Central Terminal in New York, and built a gallery cradling his art in tons and tons of marble — on top of the ferry Sewol. Tons and tons of marble, along a few framed photographs, additional cabins, and other systematic overloading, naturally, depressed the ferrys hull. So to avoid signaling the overload to Koreas hobbled shipping regulators, the crew learned to empty the ballast tanks in order to restore the ships buoyancy and get that hull back out of the water where it belongs. For all the landlubbers out there, ballast is the weight at the bottom of a ship that is supposed to counter the weight at the top of the ship and keep the center of gravity low. So then, on April 16, a backup helmsman who didnt know any better took a turn at greater than five degrees, which the normal captain would never have done considering how wobbly the crazy old thing was. So much for systems.
