She had to concentrate. So I think it was sometime after they had been acting together that the chemistry started.” In Bacall’s account, she was sitting in her dressing room, joking with Bogart, when he leaned over, put his hand under her chin, and kissed her. He then pulled a matchbook from his pocket and asked her to write her phone number on the back. Four weeks into production, they shot the “You know how to whistle, don’t you?” scene. “The way they did that scene, we knew things were happening,” Dan Seymour said. “He had that sort of smile you can still see on the screen.”
