A private automatic branch exchange (PABX) system is an automatic telephone switching system within a private enterprise. Originally, such systems - called private branch exchanges (PBX) - required the use of a live operator. Since almost all private branch exchanges today are automatic, the abbreviation PBX usually implies a PABX. this telephone network is commonly used by call centers and other organizations. PABX allows a single access number to offer multiple lines to outside callers while providing a range of external lines to internal callers or staff. Most medium-sized and larger companies use a PBX because its much less expensive than connecting an external telephone line to every telephone in the organization. In addition, its easier to call someone within a PBX because the number you need to dial is typically just 3 or 4 digits. A new variation on the PBX theme is the centrex, which is a PBX with all switching occurring at a local telephone office instead of at the companys premises.
