A professor once said to me the Blacks should stop watching TV - TopicsExpress

A professor once said to me the Blacks should stop watching TV programs and movies. His rational was that TV programs and movies help to form mental perceptions. Perceptions that elevate the worth of some while denigrating the worth of others. The ability to form perceptions, he argued, is power. Because perceptions set in motion actions, and conditions us, the viewers, on how to react to those actions based upon well crafted expectations of norms and values that we have internalize. It makes a difference psychologically to the viewer whether the characters they relate to over and over again are omnipotent or impotent. Because, the professor argued, the viewers perception of his or her self-worth is the by-product that relating. I agree with the professors argument for the most part. However, I disagree with his advocacy to stop viewing TV programs and movies all together. Because, I feel to do so is to give up powerful tools for change. But, I also feel that as viewers we must be very aware of what we are digesting. The following article provides media consumers some food for thought. I think. Some may disagree.
