A profound talk by Prof William Chittick on Sufism and special mention to Ibn Arabi and Maulana Rumi....where he said that Ibn Arabi opens the Sufi Path of Knowledge(and Wisdom) while Maulana Rumi opens the Sufi Path of Love.....and @24:00 ........Ibn Arabi is an author who is not writing for the common people by any means...not writing for the fuqaha, he is not writing for the mutakallimun. He is writing for the most sophisticated scholars of Islam who are masters of all fields, people who knew their Quran, who knew their Hadith, who knew their Tafsir, who knew the Qalam, who knew the Falsafah, who knew Sufism....and then he presents...page after page after page...he is the most profilic author in Islamic history...he is not the most profilic but in terms of maintaining, lets say...a constant level of profoundity...he is certainly the most profilic....most people repeat themselves after one....One of the wonders of Ibn Arabi...the thing that always draws me back to him is that...I can never read a new passage without being astounded...there is something new..there is always another chapter....I never thought of that....and what is it Ibn Arabi begin?...always with the Quran...he cites a verse or two...a chapter heading which is always misleading...you look at the chapter title....and you thought...ah! I know this discussion can be out....it is never the way you think it is going to be......he quotes the Quranic verses which may or may not be the one you thought be approriate....he quotes a Hadith or two and...then he began explaining....now he is drawing from fiqih...he is drawing from all school of thoughts at the same time...he is totally...original but not totally...there is ORIGINALITY there...which is ASTOUNDING! ......it is just people who know the Islamic sciences and meet him for the first time...it is just...it is basically one of the situation....but thats so obvious...why didnt anyone ever tell me this....You see it is this kind of author....you keep DISCOVERING YOURSELF IN YOU...,something that you have always known but no one has uncovered it for you.....Now look at the audience...Maulana(Rumi) is totally for everyone...philosopher.theologian,baker,street sweeper...if they are native Persian speakers...they will follow him...they will gain...Maulana is talking to a very small group of scholars...I mean Ibn Arabi is talking to a very small group of scholars...any scholar can appreciate Ibn Arabi..can get something out of Ibn Arabi...but they really get something out of Ibn Arabi...you have to work a long time perfecting the Islamic sciences. and@28:28.....but the message is the same message as you find in Ibn Arabis....Through LOVE you reach God... Ibn Arabi says the same thing...but he does stress is that....in order to PROPERLLY Love God...you have to...know God.....Know what is Knowable about God and know what is Unknowable about God and in order to do that...in the most comprehensive and perfect way....one has to be thoroughly versed in the various approaches of Islamic learning.....
