"A project (Tipaimukh) of such magnitude will have grave impacts on ecology as well as livelihood, cultures of affected people. It can have potentially disastrous consequences–especially given the number of projects in the region, as Uttarakhand has tragically shown. Speaking only of impacts on wildlife—the project will destroy about 80 lakh trees and huge quantities of bamboo-it will drown huge swathes of semi ever green and evergreen rains forests (about 280 sq km). Rare and endangered wildlife in these forests includes Hoolock gibbons, clouded leopards, golden cat, red panda, slow loris the rufous-necked hornbill--the state bird of Manipur. Why then have the impacts not been weighed from the wildlife perspective, or do we respect and protect wildlife only within the confines of a Protected Area? No afforestation programme can compensate or mitigate the loss of huge forest tracts, the biodiversity or the environmental and other impacts." telegraphindia/1130708/jsp/northeast/story_17093074.jsp#.Udozv21hBmF …
