A prominent advocate for Indigenous reconciliation in Tasmania believes recognising Aboriginal people in Australias constitution is compatible with negotiating a treaty. Tasmanian Premier Will Hodgman is considering supporting a move to acknowledge and respect Aboriginal people as the states first people. Opposition MP Madeleine Ogilvie said she was preparing a private members bill on the issue. But the idea was rubbished by Tasmanian Aboriginal activists who argued constitutional recognition would only be symbolic and a treaty would be better. READ MORE...
