A proud day for Navy & ADF community - Largest ever ship to join the Australian fleet: November 28 will be another proud day for Navy and Australia. The largest ship ever built for the Royal Australian Navy will be commissioned as HMAS Canberra and formally join the fleet. More than 1,000 guests are set to attend this unique and historic event. Canberra is a Landing Helicopter Docks (LHDs) ship and will represents the nearest capability to an aircraft carrier in operation by Navy. LHDs are capable of carrying out a variety of roles including complex amphibious operations. The ship is also designed to be able to conduct large scale humanitarian assistance and disaster relief missions. The LHD is capable of deploying or withdrawing land forces via air or sea in a variety of conditions, including areas not accessible by other means.
