A public intellectual of enormous stature within the Jewish community has died. Leonard Fein was a Leader & Thinker in multiple areas, addressing human needs, the Israeli-Palestinian conflict & the search for meaning within the Jewish community. He founded Moment, a magazine that offered a compelling alternative to Commentary. It still exists with a somewhat different mission today. I met him once. I was inspired by something he said during a speech that evening: Judaism is a social action religion. That sentence sums up how I have approached Judaism since I was a teenager, but Leonard Fein captured something important for me. He confirmed a critical component of what gives me direction.
