A publication by Cross River Watch describes the Institute of Technology, Ugep, as a world class education legacy. While I appreciate this development, I am skeptical that a school that has yet to admit its first cohort of students is described as a world class legacy by simply evaluating the physical infrastructure. The truth is, world class schools are not measured against buildings but the quality of teaching and learning. World Class colleges in USA, Canada, UK and elsewhere do not have as many buildings as the worst universities in Nigeria. The question we should be asking is, will the quality of training prepare its graduates to compete in todays globalized world? Are we building a school to train leaders or cultists? How do we employ the best and most qualified lecturers to deliver world class curriculums that would propel its graduates to make a difference in todays competitive world rather than employing staff based on party and family affiliation even if they do not qualify?
