A question for everyone: So for the past year or so, I have been using my flagship technique under two different names. When marketing and promoting a technique that you are the sole creator of, it is important for it to have a name that people will respond better to. A crucial aspect of this is memorability and ease of use. Of course, the technique that I am referring to is Damascus/Mokumé-Gané. Right off the bat, one of those names is easily more memorable and not difficult to pronounce, that being the former, Damascus. It also has more of a rapport in peoples minds, with it also being the name of the oldest city on Earth, and the first capital city in the world in a nation that still exists thousands of years after it was created. The name connects with me on a personal level, with my family originating from that city. On top of that, the technique originally comes from Damascus, and was named after the city as well. The name Mokumé-Gané is Japanese and translates to Wood grain metal. They picked up the technique some time after and in addition to using it for sword-making like they did in Damascus, they used precious metals and alloys to create works of art in the form of vases, bowls, cups and so on. The work that they have done with this technique is incredible. Personally, I prefer to call it Damascus. Clients that I have done pieces for, utilizing this technique, have also been able to tell me that they want a Damascus ring, whereas when it comes to the name, Mokumé-Gané, people have had a hard time pronouncing it, or even remembering it, and usually just tell me that ...it starts with an M. I know that it seems like a no-brainer, but I would still like the clients opinion because thats how I like to do things. So the question is this: Do you prefer the name Damascus or Mokumé-Gané for our flagship technique? -Joe _______________________________________________________ #gold #silver #jewellery #family #ring #custom #design #handmade #gemstone #diamond #Damascus #mokume #mokumegane #levant #color #levantjewellery #Windsor #windsorontario #windsorcanada #windsorontariocanada #downtown #downtownwindsor #dtwindsor #beautiful #gorgeous #love #work #cool #goldsmith #Canada
