A question for my Modern Orthodox friends: Suppose there is a young Chasid (lets say in his 20s--from Williamsburg, or Kiryas Joel, or Monsey), who wants to become Modern Orthodox. He moves to your neighborhood, and shows up at your shul. He does not speak English well, and has a heavy Yiddish/Chasidish accent. He likes comedies and action movies. He enjoys a nice meaty cholent and a hearty slice of overnight potato kugel. He has had little to no secular education. He has never read an English book, although on occasion hell page through the New York Post. For a living, he drives a Monsey Trails bus. Or maybe works in a heimish-owned warehouse. Now he wants to be one of you. Do you welcome him to your shul? Do you invite him home for a Shabbos meal? Do you invite his children to play with your children? Are you pleased when his children are accepted into your schools? Why, or why not? Genuinely curious about attitudes. Forthright and candid responses appreciated. Edit: And to all from Chasidish/Chareidi backgrounds: Have you ever experienced discomfort when trying to explore Modern Orthodoxy? Can you share your experience?
