A question has been raised regarding the use of the word mock in relation to tradition in a recent article about Purim published in the Lincoln Journal Star. The article was based on interview with me and the research conducted by the Religion Editor Erin Andersen. Neither of us was the first to use this word to explain the festive nature of the holiday of Purim. Rabbi Michael Strassfeld, in his book The Jewish Holidays: A Guide and Commentary (Haper Collins, 1985) explains, ...the Talmud says that fully accept the Torah only on Purim, for only when we mock the tradition can we fully accept it. To this, Rabbi Arnold Eisen, Chancellor of the Jewish Theological Seminary, expounds, Ingenious: And so by mocking law and authority this one day, we testify our submission to them all the rest. That is some pretty good company to be in if you ask me. Purim is an ingenious and fun holiday, and to do it right demands a healthy dose of mockery.
