A question on selflessness and stupidity... where is the line - TopicsExpress

A question on selflessness and stupidity... where is the line drawn?: For instance, is it selfless to push a stranger out of the way of an oncoming bus, placing yourself in harms way whilst saving another life... or is it stupid and naive to believe that every person is worth saving (perhaps that person has committed an act unforgivable)... Is it selfless to wholly love someone, for all that is good & bad within them whilst knowing they have never and will never return the same affections... or is it stupidity that allows you to immerse yourself in such delusions that it is okay to give so much of yourself to someone who will take it all and leave you with nothing inside... Is there a scholar/article/informative discussion that explores this??? ...just a question of curiosity :)
