A quote from my favorite LDS President: President Hinckley famously said, The Church has to be true, or the missionaries would have ruined it long ago! Legions of teenage men and women, sent out after 2-6 weeks of language training (if needed) and learning the rules of the road, go forth in pairs (and occasionally, temporary trios) to preach Gods word, call the world to repentance and faith in Jesus Christ, and generally paying their own way to do this for 18-24 months. They do not have doctorates in theology, and are not versed in theological debate, but carry with them a burning testimony of Christ and His Atonement for mankind, and a love for their fellowmen. But they are, after all, teenagers. They arent perfect, or even mature sometimes, in their approach. Sometimes their enthusiasm gets away from them. They cant answer every question, nor should they be expected to. We are commanded in the Church to search out and find our answers through searching the scriptures, following the Lords prophet, and personal revelation through diligent prayer. The missionaries sole purpose during their mission is to declare the good word of God, to call sinners to repentance, and to baptize those who have received a testimony of the restored gospel of Jesus Christ into His Church. How that is achieved comes in different ways, but always with the goal of blessing the lives of Heavenly Fathers children.
