A rare case of campus violence took place on Tuesday Oct 7th, 2014 at 2:15 pm during a Media Law and Ethics class inside lecture theatre T3 of the Meng Wah Complex at the University of Hong Kong. The footage shows what happened right after the lecturer Mr. Cliff Buddle, an SCMP veteran and legal expert, was brutally assaulted mid-lecture. Mr. Buddle was kicked and attacked with a notebook. His attacker, a 27 year-old male from Anhui, is confirmed to be a visiting student from the reputed Tsinghua University in China. Bravehearts Vangary Li and Jonathan Wong prevented him from leaving the scene. //Attacker declares, “We’re all Chinese and you should speak Mandarin in class.” As the confrontation continued in English, the attacker snapped, “Why don’t you speak in Mandarin? You’re Chinese!” He then proceeded to tell Li that he shall be spared from a fight, as he regarded him as a “fellow countryman”. He later made a second attempt to escape but was escorted back to his original seat. Throughout the altercation, the assailant made clear of his anti-West sentiments by voicing strong objections about the medium of instruction being English. Seeing as the disruptions were not letting up, Mr. Buddle called for an early class dismissal but students insisted on staying, as they were concerned about his safety and wished to act as legal witnesses of the incident. Shortly afterwards, staff members of the Department of Journalism arrived with security guards. The police soon arrived and detained the assailant at the scene. Fortunately, no one else was injured and currently, the police are investigating the facts of the matter. Credit for the footage: Michelle Zheng
