Sheikh Mujibs Awami League won a majority of seats to the Constituent Assembly after the December 1970 elections, but his constitutional proposals are unacceptable to West Pakistans minority party, led by Zulfiqar Bhutto. Mujib has organised a general strike in support of far-reaching autonomy for East Pakistan; many of his followers would like to see him declare unilateral independence.
