A really excellent video, featuring many of my colleagues at Western in conversation about the inequities and issues surrounding the exploitation of adjunct labour at Western and elsewhere. The growing reliance upon contract and part-time instructors at our universities and colleges is, first and foremost, an issue of social justice: these are (as many note in the video) excellent teachers and scholars who are being paid a fraction of what probationary and tenured faculty earn, despite the fact that their qualifications are often as good or better. Simple justice and humanity demand that we support their endeavours to achieve decent wages and job security. At the same time, the issue is one that impacts in broad and disturbing ways upon the quality of everything we do at universities. The exploitation of these highly trained and competent individuals impacts our ability as post secondary institutions to deliver the kind of research and teaching that universities are expected to produce. Please share and show your support for this video and its important message. Universities should be sites of learning and exploration, not educational sweatshops whose own labour practices undercut the kind of progressive thinking that we should be imparting.
