A recent article on the WVU Parkersburg website: Juniors and seniors at St. Mary’s High School can now earn up to 13 college credits through West Virginia University at Parkersburg’s Early Admissions program. Currently, 43 students are enrolled in at least one of the courses offered, which include English 101, Communications 111, Psychology 101 and Chemistry 115. Similar courses will also be offered in the spring. “This is a great opportunity for high school students to get a head start on their college education,” said Amy Dennis, WVU Parkersburg program manager for secondary programs. “A lot of students don’t realize that we are offering these courses right in the high school. The tuition is much less expensive through Early Admissions, so students save both time and money by getting these credits out of the way in advance.” The classes are taken at St. Mary’s High School during the school day and are taught by both WVU Parkersburg instructors and high school faculty who meet the college’s requirements to teach college credit courses. To enroll in Early Admissions classes, students must be at least a junior in high school and have a 2.5 grade point average. Certain classes such as English and math also require a minimum test score. Students interested can contact Amy Dennis at 304-424-8383.
